Thomas Friedman, the famous American writer and journalist, said ‘The world is flat.’ due to the development of information technology. And from the global financial crisis, we actually see how this world is becoming more and more dependent on each other. So it is not hard to predict that in such a “gradually-shrinking” and highly-efficient global village, effective communication, understanding of cultural differences, innovative thinking style and practical problem solving ability will be simply necessary instead of just being an idealist slogan. I believe those abilities are what truly matter on the future international stage and can only be obtained through a truly international educational environment. So there was no wonder that I was much thrilled and excited when I first got to know the School of International Liberal Studies – xxxx at xxxxx University. xxxx is a internationally operated college with international expects, and I am 100% certain that having undergraduate course here at one of the top universities in the world is definitely going to broaden my vision and lay a solid foundation for my future work on a international level or further study. Besides, the opportunity of studying Japanese and getting to know the fascinating Japanese traditional culture, having access to the Japanese cutting-edge technology, making friends with people from different places of the world, one year study in another country, various subject choices confirm me that life at xxxx will be colorful and fun. One of my former schoolmates, who is now studying at xxxx, wrote to me in the email: “xxxx has showed me a world I have never seen and lifted me to a level that I have never expected. Come to xxxx and you will never regret!” I think I would regret not going there.
And who am I? My name is xxxx, a senior 3 student of xxxxx Middle School. I come from a small countryside village in Zhejiang province; and then went to Ningbo, a port city close to Shanghai; and now I am in Shenzhen, one of the most developed cities in China, Thanks to my father’s effort, I have been to lots of places and experienced lots of changes. I used to be a shy boy, but now I organize various kinds of activities for class, take part in sports meeting of different levels, go traveling in China and abroad… I become a confident, extrovert, sport-loving and passionate teenager. I owe all these changes to my family, my teachers and my schools, especially Shenzhen Middle School, as I deeply appreciate the open atmosphere and room for development here. To get into this most selective high school in Shenzhen, I tried my best. Ever since primary school, I have been showing my trace-and-field talent, especially in running. I was always the first to arrive at the field and the last to leave. And my dream of getting into xxxxx Middle School meant I had to work extra hard on my academic performance. Finally, my effort paid off. I was successfully admitted by xxxxxx Middle School fully based on my academic results. Furthermore, during the three years’ hard training at my junior middle school, I won 10 prizes of track-and-field competitions of various levels, a third prize in a citywide science competition and a third place in a school writing competition. Other than the value of hard work, I also learned that a good time-planning and a well-organized strategy are also critical. After entering xxxxx Middle School, I have more freedom in allocate my time on sport, study and even living, as I live in the school dormitory, which teaches me independence. I became the school sports team leader right after I won the third prize in the citywide middle school students’ sports competition and the certificate of National Second Degree Athlete. Since then, besides regular training, I have taken on the responsibility of organizing training program, supervising training process, helping with training preparation. Fortunately, our team has been very competitive among peer teams in Shenzhen. I treasure the chance to apply my lessons and experiences to the school team, and more importantly, the opportunity to learn about organizing and leadership. I believe discipline is the foundation of teamwork while communication and understanding is the key to team spirit. I also attach great importance to social activities. Last year, I organized a trip of a group of schoolmates to Yunnan province in order to understand more of the local minority ethnic groups, and to practice our living skills outside home and school. The turnout was very positive. We had a great time with the local people. Meanwhile, I had a good lesson on management. Now I believe being the organizer does not mean just doing the specific work, like designing the travel plan and booking the flights, but putting the best people to do the most suitable thing; and a good team relationship does not only refer to the relationship between the leaner and the members, but also among the team members themselves.
So I am confident that I can survive and thrive at xxxxx based on what I have been through and all the lessons I have taken, which means I can also contribute to xxxxx, if I have the chance. Apart from sharing my own experiences with friends with different backgrounds, I can also help with sports and social activities. Though it doesn’t mention much about sport in xxxxx prospective brochure, I am fully convinced that regular and well-organized sports games are not only fun and good for health, but also serve as a good opportunity to train people’s mind and will and to learn team spirit and solving conflicts between team members. After all, successes in sports field and in other fields have a lot in common.
Former US president Gerald Ford once said: “Nothing in life is more important than the ability to communicate effectively.” That emphasizes the importance of communication and expression, where I lay my great interest and wish in the future to dedicate myself. And when I could help bring people closer to each other, bring smile and food to the poor, create a greener future and thus change the world for better, I believe I make my life worthwhile. ‘The only reason for living is being fully alive.’ said D. H. Lawrence, the British novelist and poet. I regard xxxxx as the bridge to all the possibilities and fulfillments in my future!
